The
Glasgow Destitution Network is a network of churches, community groups
and individuals working to coordinate emergency housing, food, clothing,
cash and other support for those excluded from the social welfare
safety net who find themselves homeless and destitute with no access to
housing, employment or benefits. Most are migrants, such as refugees who
have been refused asylum, or unemployed people from Europe.

Working towards a Fairtrade Archdiocese
The
Fairtrade mark guarantees that workers in the development world receive
a fair price for their products. By choosing to buy fairly traded
products, we can make a big difference to the lives of people in
developing countries.
The
Commission are presently campaigning to make the Archdiocese of Glasgow
a Fairtrade Archdiocese. To achieve this goal, 50% of the parishes
within the Archdiocese must be certified as Fairtrade parishes.
To become a Fairtrade Parish, you must:
1. Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and for all meetings for which you have responsibility.
2. Move forward on using other Fairtrade products (such as sugar, biscuits and fruit).
3.
Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year
through events, worship and other activities whenever possible.
Once you have achieved the three goals, please complete the Fairtrade Church Application Form and return it to the Fairtrade Foundation by
email or post to Fairtrade Church Application, The Fairtrade
Foundation, 3rd Floor, IBEX House, 42-47 Minories, London EC3N 1DN. Once
your application has been processed, you will be sent a Fairtrade
Church certificate to display in your church.
The
Commission has sent round a questionnaire to find out what individual
parishes are doing. Some have completed the process and are already
Fairtrade parishes, and we are encouraging those who are almost there
take the final steps. We hope to have reached the 50% by the end of the
year, so that we can achieve Fairtrade Diocese status.
Commission
members have been active in encouraging their own parishes to achieve
this status and so far the following have been successful: St. Kessog’s,
Balloch; St. Joseph’s, Milngavie; St. Leo’s, Dumbreck; Our Lady of
Lourdes, Cardonald; St Jude’s, Barlanark; St. Simon’s Partick.
St.Joseph's, Tollcross have received Fairtrade status within the last
few days. St Mary's Duntocher is the only parish which has so far
declined to become involved in this campaign.
It is hoped that a further push in advance of Fairtrade Fortnight in February will encourage more parishes to take this step.

Act Now! Many
high street shops are now stocking fairly traded goods. It is a quick
and easy way to make huge difference to the lives of some of the world
poorest people.
